Angels Among Us.....

Sometimes I'm amazed at the kindness and generosity of others. Maybe it's because I know sometimes I'm not as kind and as generous as I should be. I hope I'm not turning into some crusty old-timer. But the other night I was witness to hundreds of people giving their time, talents, and money so that some handicapped young people could  have a night to remember.

We were invited to A Night To Shine. This is a formal dinner party, or prom, for special needs families of kids 14 and older. This is produced by the Tim Tebow Foundation. Most of us know Tim Tebow as an outstanding college football player. He was a Heisman Trophy winner and National Champion at the University of Florida under Coach Urban Meyer. He's also known for being a Christian. While his professional football career never amounted to much, he's obviously successful in other areas.

My son Kenny was born premature weighing in at 2 pounds. Unfortunately, one complication of that is blindness. While he still has his own interests and activities, the truth is he doesn't get out much. So when he was invited to this event, he was all in. American Commodore Tuxedo offered discounts for those attending A Night To Shine, so we took him up to get measured up and order one.

Cavs Girl Emily & Ken.
The event was held at a very large and modern church in the area. As soon as we arrived, I knew we weren't in Kansas anymore. The valet parking directed us to the front entrance where we we greeted by a red carpet, paparazzi, and a crowd cheering for us. My wife started tearing up right there.

After checking our coat, we were in a fantastically decorated lobby. We were interviewed by some guy in a tux holding a microphone. People were still cheering. We made it into the huge main room that also was very elegant looking. We met some lovely Cavs Girls that were there. Elizabeth, Emily, and Kareema were friendly and beautiful as usual. At least they didn't have to say, "Enjoy the game!"
But the main room wasn't for the parents or caregivers.

We left Kenny at his table and went downstairs to another huge room. In this room we were entertained by a great band and had a wonderful dinner. But wait, That's not all! There was also a room for massages. Ladies could also get their hair, makeup, and nails done. On top of that there were baristas making you gourmet coffees. Gift bags were given away. After dinner upstairs the guests of honor danced the night away. Ken brought down the house with karaoke.

Now guess how much this cost me. Nothing. Zero. The entire evening was either donated by businesses or people giving to the Tim Tebow Foundation. Wonderful people also donated their time as well. They were truly angels among us. How many people? At the event we were at there was over 500 volunteers. They all wanted to be there too. This was no community service project for pot smokers.

There were no fake smiles the whole night. Just people showing their love to people less fortunate. I don't know if the kids, the parents, or volunteers had a better time. It was a wonderful evening.
