Let's Get Ridiculous With Christmas Songs.....

We live in such crazy times. There is very little these days that shocks me when I listen to the news. But yesterday I heard a news item that really caught my attention.

There is a local radio station that plays all Christmas music, all day and all night. They start around Thanksgiving. However, the station made an announcement yesterday that they were banning the song, "Baby It's Cold Outside" from their playlist.. Now that, caught my attention.

Apparently this is in support of the #metoo movement. They say the song is about a guy that won't take no for an answer. The radio station is not alone in this. The Urban Dictionary calls it the "Christmas Date Rape Song".

For those of you not familiar with the tune, it's a beautiful holiday duet sung by a man and a women. The guy wants his girl to stay, while the girl comes up with reasons to go. But nobody is forced to do anything. The word "ruffies" does not appear in the lyrics.

This song was written in the 1944. Maybe some things just had a different meaning back then. But to be honest, I've heard that song forever, and I never thought there was anything wrong with it. I liked that song a lot. Still do. But maybe that's because I'm an old man.

In the 40's the song was recorded by Ella Fitzgerald, and Dinah Shore.

But lately the song was recorded by these contemporary artists: Lady Gaga, Sara Bareilles, Darius Rucker, Michael Buble, Christina Aguilera  Jimmy Buffett, Sheryl Crow, Meghan Trainor, Fantasia and CeeLo Green.
For shame on these contemporary artists! The hidden meaning must have passed them by too.

While we're banning Christmas songs, here's a few more that we should consider:

  • "Away in a Manger" glorifies being homeless.
  • "Up On The Rooftop" promotes home invasions.
  • "Oh Christmas Tree" promotes killing trees.
  • "White Christmas " might be for or against the global warming movement. Not sure which.
So anyway, it looks like we just have more to disagree about this Christmas season. My recommendation is just to sit back in a comfy chair with a hot chocolate and some Christmas cookies. Just think about the true meaning of Christmas: Peace on Earth and Good Will to All.

Unless you're against that.

You be the judge: Here's an old time version with Dean Martin.
Here's one where Lady Gaga turns the tables.
