Attention Moms: Pack A Kevlar Vest with your Kid's Lunch.....

Last week on January 23rd, a boy and girl, both 15 years old were shot and killed at their school in Benton, Kentucky. 18 were injured. The shooter was also 15 years old, Maybe you heard about it. That one made the news. Not all of them do.

The scene at Benton, Kentucky. Number 11 and counting.
That marked the 11th school shooting this year. Not the school year. Just 2018.  That's 23 days. For people that keep count, there has been an average of one school shooting per week since 2013. In 2018, we are on pace for about 145 school shooting incidents.

Of course, not all of them are "news worthy". Some are suicides. Sometimes, the shooter misses people. I guess that's not news. But if I was a young kid and saw a kid that had killed themselves in my school restroom, it would be news to me. I don't think I would be visiting that restroom anymore.

School shootings have become routine. They are covered on the news for a couple of days, and then we move on. Buy why? If we can't protect little kids at school, then where are we as a society? There seems to me there are logical steps to take. I'm not talking about gun control. Effective gun control will never happen.

Map of school shooting locations from 12/12 to 6/14. Couldn't find a current one.
But we can put metal detectors, armed guards, and more security cameras in every school. Just make that stuff standard equipment in every school. And I don't want to hear about the cost of it. There's got to be a way to figure it out. How much are our kids worth?

You would imagine there would be national outrage about this continuing cycle of school violence. You would think there would be either a congressional or local committee studying the situation and making recommendations, right? Nope. Today some schools have drills about what to do when a shooter is on the loose. In my day we had drills about what to do in case of nuclear attack. At least they don't do that anymore. Well, maybe in Hawaii.

You can't really blame the news media for not giving more attention to these national tragedies. There are so many other prime news topics. Last week we had the morons in Washington worrying more about partisonism than patriotism. We had the doctor that raped dozens of little girls with the permission of the powers that be. But news also happened around the world. In France they had the Nutella Riots. That's right. Riots broke out across France when a store had a sale on Nutella.

So before the next major news story. If you are a parent of a school age child, go to a school board meeting. Find out what your schools are doing, and what they wish they could do about this violence. Just start the conversation. You never know where it will go.

It's time for positive intention to turn into positive actions.
